Student Stories – Great Hollands Primary School Monet Art Project
Our next Student Story is about Great Hollands Primary School, where Year 6 pupils created beautiful Impressionist-style paintings inspired by the artist Claude Monet and his famous gardens at Giverny — showing creativity, curiosity and growing artistic confidence.
The project introduced pupils to Monet’s approach to light, colour and atmosphere, encouraging them to express ideas visually and explore a style that focuses on feeling rather than fine detail. Using only primary colours plus black and white, the children learnt how to mix tones carefully and match shades of light and shadow, developing resilience, independence and problem-solving along the way.
This experience helped pupils build creative confidence, showing them they don’t need “perfect lines” to produce meaningful and beautiful artwork. Many found this realisation empowering and began experimenting more freely with their ideas.
Reflecting on the process, Fung and Jessie said:
“Completing a piece using a challenging technique helped us feel proud of our progress and our final artwork.”
Year 6 staff supported the project by preparing resources and guiding pupils through the techniques, helping every child feel able to succeed.
👏 Congratulations to everyone in Year 6 at Great Hollands Primary School for demonstrating creativity, resilience and a willingness to try something new.
